1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As thrillers go there are a number of typical conventions that make them instantly recognisable, as being a film of that genre, these conventions can be seen through the use of all four film mediums: Mise-en-scene, Editing, Cinematography and Soundtrack.

Mise-en-scene

Low lighting in a Thriller film is used to make the audience feel uneasy so in our film we decided to use a place that has a very eerie lighting to it already. The car park we have used has lights but they miss the corners and certain parts of the car park, so therefore at night there are blind spots all around which makes the audience uneasy because lot of people have a fear of the unknown. This therefore gives our film that gritty and edgy we want to achieve.

In the thriller films we chose to look at closely and take some strong inspirations from they show a big theme of blood, which is why our film involves this thriller convention. For example if you watch the clip from Pulp Fiction below from 2:48 they use blood to impact there audience as is a horrible image and they wish to shock there audience. This is very similar to our film attempts to do with the scenes of death, blood and sick.

Cinematography

We used long shots in our film to give the audience a sense of isolation of the two characters. The long shots show the setting and the state of the characters which gives the audience a small insight to what has gone on. We then used close ups to give closer more detailed clues to the audience which will give them a bigger insight to what has gone on.

Editing

In certain parts of out film the editing is quick and very fasted paced. This is to make the audience feel what the characters feel. For example the girl is scared but her adrenaline really kicks in when she begins to run away from the scene of the crime. Therefore the editing conveys the idea of panic and adrenaline to the audience who then because of the editing feel how the character is feeling. One of the best examples of our film editing is in the video underneath, it's quick but the continuous editing is what we have focused on. When I step back the cuts are near perfect and it looks really effective.

Soundtrack

We carefully picked our music so that we could edit our shots to the bass notes of the soundtrack. It starts of slow paced and calm and as the girl finds out more and more as well as the audience does the music becomes more intense which reflects again the mood and the panic the character is in. At the end of our film a heartbeat kicks in and the screen fades to black before the title at the end. This creates tension in the audience as they can hear the panic in the characters heartbeat and it forebodes trouble.

Our opening sequence therefore does follow the basic well known conventions of a Thriller film. For example our main themes involve blood, death and a very mysterious storyline. It makes the audience ask questions from the very beginning and keeps them engaged to the very end. In Thrillers films is is crucial to add mystery to the situation the characters find themselves in because it involves the audience in the storyline and makes them think about where the film is going. The only thing that's challenged the conventions of a Thriller is that we've used as strong female character the same way the makers of 'The disappearance of Alice Creed' have done. We did this so that we could include different female characteristic into our protagonist. She, like Alice Creed is very clued up and 'street smart', instead of using that typical violence we see in many thriller films like Se7en.

Assessment of Evaluation posts for Q. 3 and 6 (SJA Feb 14th)

WWW:
  • Looking over your blog, I am pleased that you have made a really good start on the Evaluation questions Grace
  • There are some good attempts to make posts visual in some way, and your written comments show a generally good grasp of what each question requires of you
  • I really like your use of short 'grabs' from your opening sequence Grace for some of the evaluation questions
  • Your opening sequence is looking REALLY good Grace, and YOU have been to moving force behind the ideas and creativity - you should feel really pleased with how it is developing, make sure you invest lots of time in to your Evalution to reach those top level grades for your blog.
EBI:
  • To improve, and ensure that standard of your work is an A grade, you should come back to your posts and continue to develop them Grace.
  • I checked Q. 3 and 6 carefully, as these were the 2 that we agreed on in last Monday's lesson. There are some developments that I'd like you to do to improve each...
  • Q. 3 on 'Distribution' does not seem to be a single post? YOu seem to have combined it with another evaluation question. I think you need to make it a post in its own right, and really explore why Miramax is the company that is best suited to distribute your film. Include screen grabs from your own sequence and compare to grabs from 'like' films to explore what the opening sequences have in common, and why your lends itself to Miramax.
  • Q. 6 - For an 'A', I really think that you need to make use of screen cast software to SHOW the daily use of technology that is involved in Media (blogger, iMovie, Live type, improting, etc, etc... screen grabs...) Show your developing skill in technology to explain how you use technology daily.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Before starting our final product we filmed a preliminary task, this is so we could look back and seen that in our final product how much we have improved. In our film there is a vast improvement in camera angels and shot types, it slowly reveals our characters and gives the audience time to ask questions about what it is that's happened and why they think these characters are there. This is a contrast to our preliminary task because you see the characters straight away and there isn't a build up. This short clip shows a few of the interestiong camera angels we have used and indicates how effective they are

This next clip shows how creative our group has been and the idea behind our film. In the preliminary task the story line was very limited but in our final task the audience have to guess what our film is about. We give no clues as to why the girl is there or why the man is laying dead next to her. This is because we are supposed to make the audience make pre assumptions of the characters and what they have done that has led up to this scene. This short clip shows the girl rubbing blood from her hands, the audience may think she has killed the man seeing as she has the blood on her hands or is it that simple...

When we made our preliminary task I was very new to the Macs and all the different programs. However now I am very confident in using imovie and editing our clips together to make our film look professional.

Overall all my media skills have been greatly improved. I find it easy now to use the camera and tripod and keeping all shots steady. We as a group work very well we use everyone's ideas and try each out to see which is best, one thing we may need to work on is getting cuts and shots to link continuously perfectly because we need our film to look professional to get the A we all hope for.

5. How did we attract or address the audience?

Our opening sequence is dark and sinister, it straight away puts the audience in the middle of a crime scene and asks them to judge who has done the deep. Adrenaline packed films attract boys aged 16 - 24 as they are fast paced full of fighting, blood and explosions. our film is full of adrenaline and fast editing to create that feel but it also makes you think. You follow the story of a young girl, similar to 'The disappearance of Alice Creed' or 'Salt' we use a strong willed woman character to challenge the woman stereotype and appeal to a bigger audience that like films that make you think with the character. She is a teenager which most of our audience can relate to her, maybe in her personality traits or appearance. Both character in the opening sequence look out of place, for example why would a man in a nice, fitted suit be laying in a run down car park. We use this starting image to create a sense of mystery our audience will like, it's sets up the beginnings of a 'who done it' story line. It may look as if the girl has committed a serious crime but she is young. In our film you have to think and this will appeal to our audience because they become emotionally involved with the girl therefore stereo-typically emotions appeal to woman and the full adrenaline packed actions sequences within appeal to mean, making the market of our film bigger.

Our opening sequence appeals to it's target audience through typical features of a thriller. For example, quick cut editing is one of our main focuses. This is because action/thrillers are typically fast paced to draw the audience in. Also a fast paced heart beat and a eerie score creates the suspense the target audience want. we realised that men tend to watch thrillers more than women. This is shown from our questionnaire results. The results also show that thrillers appeal to men more due to their mystery, suspense and exciting story lines. Men like action. However we have challenged that strong male lead role stereotype and used a female. This is because we want to have a strong female lead like in the film 'Salt', which bought both female and male audiences together as the film appealed to both.

We have gathered audience feedback for our film. People have been giving some very constructive feedback and it shows that we have really catered to our audience our audience of 16 - 24 year olds because we asked people between this age gap.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We were asked to make a production company for our film and our group decided to call it SEEDY MOTEL PRODUCTIONS. This is because is many horror and thriller film an off road dark seedy looking motel is the typical setting. We chose a font to go with the same and created just a simple yet effective logo...

It's a very strong bold title and no one would miss it. I think the font reflects our film because it reveals nothing. This is rather like the font for the productions compant 'Troublemaker' which produced films like Sincity. It uses the same block font, which is stong and relates to the hard hitting film matter and also reflects the slight violence and blood involved.
We can change it our fony and take it down different roads and use it for different films this is how we developed it for Trace Decay..

We then had to research distributions companies that would distribute our film. We looked originally into using distribution company such a Miramax people will see that straight away our film is an alternative thriller following the likes of 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Kill Bill' whom also creates a woman character who is strong and fights for herself. We then looked into the company Lionsgate that take on controversial films like 'Saw' or 'American Psycho'. This would suit our film because it does involve a lot of blood and gory images. On the other hand that is not all our film is about, this film should make you think about the violence and make the audience become involved with the characters they are watching.

how to make gifs

How to make gifs

So after some research we are going to use 'Paramount Vantage' to distribute our film whom have also distributed films like No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood, which won endless awards like best sound, editing and cinematography. We looked at other possible options and eliminated companies such as, 'Universal' but this is a HUGE company and distribute money making film whereas our film is for a more indie market with a lower budget.

'Paramount Vantage' is a low budget, American distribution company which is the indie label of Paramount. They came about in 2007 and focuses more on the art and production of a film as opposed to making money. As our film qualifys as British because where it is made and who made it we then qualify for BFI funding which we would then invest into the making of our film. Also because Paramount Vantage is the indie label of Paramount we could be given funding from Paramount to use in the making of our film. Finally we as a group believe our film would be an 18 because of it's strong adult themes and violence we compared our film to films like Se7en.

Assessment 23/1/12 MCU

WWW

- A good attempt to make your posts supervisual. The inclusion of clips from your film is a good idea. This could be further developed into a mini documentary with voice over, which would be an excellent way to work towards level 4.
- SPAG is good.
- All four posts completed so far, but you will need to put more detail and effort into these.

EBI

- You should discuss more than just social class for representation. What about gender? Ethnicity?
- You discuss distribution when you answer Q4. You will need to do a seperate question for distribution so instead you should focus more clearly on who the audience would be for your product.
- You could further develop your Q4 by including more detail when writing about your target audience, consider also the interests of your audience. Create a profile of your 'ideal' audience member. What do they like to do? What do they buy? How often do they go to the cinema and who with?
- You need to return to your technologies post and add in more detail.

Remember you will need all your posts to be supervisual, think about how you can do this. I would like you to go beyong prezi and images, I would like you to create a voice over commentary or a mini-documentary to reach level 4.

Teacher Assesment

Tools or effect we have used?

We are using contrast difference on the house shots to make the lighting look simular and enharnce the girl is at home alone and night. We have to make sure it looks as if it's at night so that the shots look continuous and work well together. ALso blur is being used in a point of view shot in the car park, this is to indicate that the girls vision is blurry and that she had been knocked out also it could represent the girls loss of memory. We tried a slow motion effect during the running sequence of our film but unfortunatly it did not go with our music so we did not use it. You need slower music like this video:

Finally we would like to maybe try and use a fade in and fade out through the blur shot to indicate that the girl is trying to get her eyes back into focus and to actually be able to see what her surroundings are and if they are familliar.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product??

These are all the different programs, websites and equipment we have used to create our film. Before starting media at Alevel only one of the members in our group knew how to use a mac. Every single bit of software we have used has been very important and use full in making our film. For example even though JING is not used in the making of our film it is very use full in creating blog posts by being able to record our computer screen and make it into a file that we can include in our blogs. The main bit of software we have used is imovie HD, this is the program we edit and create the main bulk of our film. Editing for all of our group has become a lot easier after our practice tasks at the beginning which made us understand the importance of continuous editing and the 360 rule. Finally we can see the vast improvement in our camera skills from the beginning, the camera is hardly shaking and a clear rage of interesting and interesting shots used in our film. Overall I have good skills in all these technologies and more and it is clearly shown in the improvements I have made in my coursework and practical work. One skill that we learnt at the beginning of the course is how to use a tripod correctly here are some of the tripod rules...

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

We as a group decided to focus on people aged around 16 - 24, we gave all our questionnaires to people of this age. We focused on this group because a lot of people this age like action thriller films. We've put our audience straight in where the action starts to make sure they are engaged and asking questions from the very beginning. Our target market is made up of people from a working class background. This is represented through the use of location and setting, the area we chose to film looks industrial and rough, which is an area that you don't associate with the upper class. However we see a man in a very nice cut and styled suit. Therefore the audience are asking questions about the actors and the situation the have found themselves in. As a group we have aspired and analysed films such a 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Se7en' and 'The dissapearence of Alice Creed' which are very gritty and adrenaline packed films, we looked particularly at these films because they attract a similar audience and they give the audience the same adrenaline rush when they watch them as we want our audience to feel watching our film. For exapamle in 'Alice Creed' we see clear moments of very face paced editing...

powered by Splicd.com

Which we then also see this fast paced editing in moments of panic in our film...

The fast editing makes the film seem alot more adrenaline packed therefore relating to the audience we are trying to achieve. Finally we made our film with actors who are similar ages to the audience we want to attract, this is so the audience can relate to the characters and really get into the life of the main girl and understand what might of driven her to this or what might make her so strong as to find out why she has been framed.

This screen cast shows a few films that we were inspired by and that have the same audience that we wish to target, some of the pictures in the screen cast are from our film and as you can see they are not so different from the films we have analysed. Seeing these pictures all together shows that our film will appeal to the same type of audience because our film is very similar in the camera shots we have used and the costumes and blood that is conveyed in all films.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our film we focus on social class by using both the setting and the clothes to portray this. For example our film is mostly set in a car park in which both a man and a woman lay, the man is dead and the girl has blood on her. The car park is quite dirty looking and run down, conveying the fact it could be in a lower class area. It fits in with our Thriller film because is a dark, isolated setting which makes the audience think why this young girl and man are there and what has happened.

Also we use the characters costumes to convey a divide between lower and a high class of person. For example the dead man in the film is in a suit and looks very out of place in the middle of a car park. He looks from a higher class and this then adds a lot of mystery to our film as the audience are asking why would a man who looks so smart be in a place that so run down and 'rough. The girl however is in loose fitting clothes and is very dressed down, she sits in with her run down surrounding but she is quite young. This again makes the audience think why would someone like that be laying in a place like this with blood on her hands.

Possible Title Fonts

making a gif

We looked for fonts to use for our titles on 'dafont.com'. We looked for fonts that linked with the meaning of the title of the film and also the themes throughout the film. 'Trace Decay' means the decay of memories from your brain. Simply put, it means to forget. Therefore, we have chosen fonts that appear to dissolve or decay into the background.

online gif creator

As a group we have decided that we will show our titles over actual footage rather than showing them over a black background, as the sequence is only two minutes long. Using this method would be boring and we would not get full marks for shot types.

online gif creator

As a group, we felt that this method is a lot more effective in showing the mystery we are trying to portray to the audience. By using the extreme close ups and fast paced editing in our opening sequence, it will be a lot more effective. We will also introduce certain characters from our film whilst we are showing all the titles which will be in a simple font in different corners of the frame.

Character Description

Alice:

Alice is a young girl aged 20. She has a good social life and goes out with friends often. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a very good family life as her parents are always arguing. Consequently, she goes out alot and spends her money. She has an ok job and is quite content.

'Dead man':

A young business man in his late 20's who's proud of what he's achieved in life. He works in a high status job. He has a good career and is very focussed on his goals. He has a great family life, including a wife and kids but not such a good social life. This is because he lacked confidence in speaking to people throughout his childhood.

Chris didn't make our post supervisual so we redid it. Because we had to re-do it, we've put a video of chris up so hope you enjoy :)

props, costumes and locations

Props:

Here are a few ideas of some of the props we could use in our opening sequence. They include; an old beaten up mobile phone, an old Bible and fake blood. These props would be suitable to use for a thriller as they could all relate to our story and emphasise the atmosphere of mystery to the audience.

Costume:
The dead man on the floor is wearing a black suit with blood on his shirt. This will help o convey the mystery of the sequence to the audience and will make the audience question why the man's wearing a suit.

The girl will be wearing ripped blue jeans with blood smeared on them. She will also be wearing a white shirt with small tears in them. The audience will now question why the girls clothes are ripped and have blood on them.

Locations:
We are going to film in the St Nicholas car park in Sutton. We think this will be a good location to film as it would be successful in creating a mysterious atmosphere for the audience. The audience will then question the significance of this setting.

These are the locations we will be using in our opening sequence. The first scene is to be in the ST Nicholas car park in Sutton. We have chosen this location as not only does it fit in with the theme of our sequence but also because of the lighting and atmosphere it give the audience. The next location is my house. The front door will be shown in one of the shots with Alice trying to open it. The next shots are of my bathroom. Once Alice goes into the house, she then goes into the bathroom to try and wash the blood off her hands.

Animato - Storyboard

This is me writing out our storyboard and including the camera shots, camera movements and what is to take place in our film. These are all very important for making our film successful also the storyboard to our film is really going to help us. We now have a clear plan of what we want to create in our film and as a group, we all have a clear image in our heads of what our film is to look like. It is quite exciting to slowly see our film coming together.

We used an animation style layout for our story board. The shots are the pictures in the storyboard and are set to cut to other shots at about the same time as it will in our actual film. We have also used music and sound in this animation which we would like to use in our film. We as a group believe the music and heart beat really reflect our genre and the mood of our Opening Sequence.

Casting

Man in suit

We as a group have chosen Chris Pattwell to be the man in the suit because he is male, around the right height for our character. Also he has a mature hair cut which makes him look older so makes him look like a typical buisness man.

Alice

The group has chosen me as the main actor in the opening sequence because I have a strong understanding of acting by doing GCSE drama and also taking it further as a A Level course. Our main character is a girl as is around 20 years of age, we will use make up and style of clothing to make me look and seem older than I am.

The Cast!

Jamie Watts is our director of camera shots and is in charge of the sound. He will be the main person behind the camera making sure everything is framed well and looks right for our genre. He is also working on the sounds and music to our film. This will include researching and creating the music which will untimately set the mood for our film.

I will be an actor in our film and also the overall editor. The editor is crucial for creating the final film and making all the shots link and work together. I will have to make all the transitions work well in our film so that they all flow effortlessly and cleanly.

As a group, we have all decided on the set of our film because we all have to be completely comfortable with where we are filming and the overall look to our opening sequence. Also we have all decided on the titles of our opening sequence and we still have to decided on the name of our film which will be made as a group decision.

shot list

These are some of the shots we put together to create a starter point for our opening sequence. We focused on the conventions of  a Thrillier opening sequence to help us develp these shot types and movements.

This is me typing up some of our shots. Writing a shot list for our film is very important, the shot list makes it very clear to the group what types of shots we will be using. It's hard to see them visually. That is where the storyboard comes in but the shot list gives us a clear idea of what we are trying to show in our film and how we are going to get our idea across.

The Sounds and Music we would like in our Opening Sequence

We have two musically talented members of our group (Chris and Jamie) and we wish to make our own score for the Opening sequence, this way we will have no trouble with the laws of copyright and so on. Our film is in the genre of thriller, so we would also want to include some sounds and music that will reflect our genre. For example:

I really like this sounds because it is a low and deep pounding noise. This could be used for when the girl is getting up to show how disorientated she is and if maybe we blurr the screen the audience cannot see what is happening but by the affect of the sound, they'll know it isn't going to be good.

I am also quite interested in using the rain to create a sense of forboding in the scene. The rain creates a mysterious, isolated atmosphere in which the girl in the scene is suffering.

I like this noise for when the girl is fully awake and is trying to remember what has happened. She is looking around for clues, she doesn't find much until she see's the mans lifeless body laying on the floor.

This sound creates the overall feel we want our opening sequence to create. We want it to show the distress of the girl and how she is isolated and alone. She does not understand why she is there and neither do the audience, therefore it will create questions and the audience will want to know did the girl kill the nicely dressed man and why or was it someone else....

Music Influences

This piece of music by 65daysofstatic is a great stimulus for the music we wish to create for our opening sequence. This piece has many different tempos which reflect the mind set of the girl and how she does not know what has happened and why she is here. The piano in the song is soft at the beginning but as the music builds it's clear a sense of panic has kicked. This is how we can show the panic of the girl in our scene. We can imitate the tempo and the use of over powering instruments to help us create the feelings and emotions in our opening sequence.

Competed Research

Asking our participants gender helps us generalize our study and we can see that because more male participants took our study it means our target audience will be male.

The target audience of our film is for teenagers and older. I asked 12 people to take my questionarre on Thriller films and opening sequences, it was a quick straight forward questionarre so no one had any trouble filling it out.

We asked our participants what type of Thriller they liked. Out of the 12 people 7 of them preferred a Horror Thriller to any of the other options we gave them. Therefore because of our research my group have decided to make a Horror style Thriller.

We also asked our participant if they like a title sequence to create mystery. We thought this was important to find out because we did not know whether people would like to meet the main characters of our Thriller straight away or for there to be a sense of mystery. 7 out of the 12 people like the sense of the unknown and mystery in a title sequence. As a group we will take that into account and use more close ups and extreme close ups on objects and the characters to create mystery throughout the scene.

Film Synopsis of our Thriller

Initial Ideas for Opening Sequence

We as a group have decided through extensive research to make a Thriller opening sequence. We want to add alot of mystery in our opening sequence so we have decided to use the characters lack of memory make the audience start asking questions.

The titles of the sequence will run over the shots of the action, they themselves will be very creepy and distorted so as to reflect the memory of the girl, also the low key lighting we will use will help the audience feel the tention in the film.

Audience Research

This is my groups questionarre for the research into our Thriller opening sequence. Our film target audience is 15 - 18 year olds. I asked 10 people to fill out our questionarre and we will gather our research together and look at the answers people have given and use this to our advantage whilst making our film.

Location for filming

Location one.

This is a very typical urban setting, it is woodland based but very much tampered with by youths and modern technology by the graffiti and electrisity pylon. This location is in rosehill and is a five minute walk away from school, no one owns this location it is a public place mainly used by youths. It can work very well for a Thriller genre of film as it is very quiet and secluded from the people around. It is very private and when dark can be eerie and can be very easily be used for a stalking sequence in which the victim cannot see his/her stalker.

Location two.

This is a very ceal urban setting. It is an quiet estate and not many people are around, it's not private property and we can freely film there as long as we don't film anyone else around. It's in sutton and from school takes about 15 - 20 minutes to get there by bus. This in the dark would be very good for a Thriller film as there are alot of quiet, dark corners people can hide and watch from. The feeling of being watched is a big theme in Thrillers because to someone who is walking through somewhere like that at night and feels as though they are being watched can be a scary prospect.

Analysis of The Godfather opening sequence

In the Godfather onening sequence there is no acting, it is just titles to music. All the titles are white at the momment and the background is plain black. It starts with a graphic that looks like a hand holding the handle of a puppet the the strings run down into the titles, starting with the distributions companies Paramount Pictures and Francis Ford. It lingures on the titles until the strings reach the bottom and then follows them down to the next titles below which are the writer (Mario Puzo) and music (Nino Rola and Carmine Coppola). Finally the strings reveal the first main actor (Marlon Brando) who is a big Hollywood actor. It reveals a graphic of the actors face looking menicing still keeping with the white and black theme. The strings then carry on down the page.

The next actor revealed is Al Pacino, he again looks very menicing as his eyes open and look as if he's staring at the audience which could make them uncomfortable. He is a very prestigious Italian mafia actor, so it gives a strong clue to the audience that this is a mafia ganster style thriller. Another clue of the genre is the music, the music is all strings which plays a romantic typical Italian score which relates to the old fashioned mafia cults. The titles carry on revealing the actors James Cann, Robert Divall and Diane Heaton. It clearly shows the characters aren't as important because it moves on from them quicker than it does from the other two showing the audience they are supporting characters. Colour is finally added to the tilte sequence, a white graphic of what look like roses grow upwards and a a strip of red runs across the screen and into one flower. Making it not a blood red rose. This can forbode dead in the film because as the red runs into the rose is looks like blood. A red petal falls from the rose.

It now tracks the petal which is in the middle of the screen to show significance aswell as the strings which are at the sides of the screen still creating the titles. The strings then fade away and we are left as an audience watching the blood petal fall, still the music is playing. It stops traking the petal and lets it fall to the floor in which in then fades out and the puppeteer hand appears at the top of the screen, the string run down again but this time creating the white bold title of the film, The Godfather. The music has now peaked and is very powerful slightly overwhelming the audience to make them see that whoever is The Godfather has alot of power. In relation to power the graphic of the puppeteer hand indicates to the audience that The Godfather contros people the same way a puppeteer controls his puppets.
